NA + JUNKO
Na + Junko are truly Japanese Pop from the roots. If I didn't know better, I would say that their creative process included a step where they wrap puppy dog smiles in sunshine and pump them through a mixer for a secret subliminal track. I feel like they're grinning at me through my stereo and I can't help but smile back. What sets them apart from the plethora of J-Pop groups are the diverse influences from which they draw, from mid-century rock 'n' roll, electronic dance, and video game sound tracks to indie rock, folk, and even choral music. Na + Junko absorb this broad range, and they use it to create an incredibly polished, unique work. By employing a high production quality, they seamlessly blend and juxtapose guitar, organ, piano, percussion, and synthetic sounds, all of which are evidenced in this issue. |
![]() Na + Junko have found a way to take a very precise and mechanical process and produce a sound that is infused with an organic, human sensibility. The overall expression is lighthearted and playful, but their dedication to craft reveals a serious side. The resultant music is buoyant and warm, like that awesome friend who calls to cheer you up with promises of ice cream sundaes when you're down. You might not even be hungry, or want to see him, but once you do, all of a sudden the sun's shining again, and you're laughing and making silly faces at each other. - Sterling Waters |
